Lunar Phases

Introduction

Lunar phases are the changes in the apparent shape of the Moon as seen from Earth. These changes are caused by the varying positions of the Moon, Earth, and Sun.

Phases of the Moon

The Moon goes through eight main phases over the course of a month:

• New Moon: When the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun, it is not visible from Earth.
• Waxing Crescent: As the Moon moves away from the Sun, a thin crescent of light becomes visible.
• First Quarter: When the Moon is halfway between the New Moon and Full Moon, half of the Moon is illuminated.
• Waxing Gibbous: The illuminated portion of the Moon continues to grow larger.
• Full Moon: When the Moon is opposite the Sun, the entire face of the Moon is illuminated.
• Waning Gibbous: As the Moon moves away from the Sun, the illuminated portion of the Moon begins to decrease.
• Third Quarter: When the Moon is halfway between the Full Moon and New Moon, half of the Moon is illuminated.
• Waning Crescent: A thin crescent of light remains visible as the Moon approaches the Sun.

Factors Affecting Lunar Phases

1. Lunar Orbit: The Moon takes approximately 27 days to orbit the Earth.
2. Earth’s Orbital Plane: The Moon’s orbit is not perfectly aligned with Earth’s orbit around the Sun.
3. Sun’s Position: The relative positions of the Sun, Earth, and Moon determine the lunar phase.
