The History of Google.com

Google is a search engine that was first developed in 1996 by Larry Page and Sergey Brin while they were Ph.D. students at Stanford University. The company was originally called “Backrub” before being renamed to “Google” in 1997, a play on the word “googol,” which is a mathematical term for the number represented by 1 followed by 100 zeroes.

Google’s search engine uses a proprietary algorithm to rank websites in response to a user’s query. This algorithm takes into account over 200 factors or “signals,” such as the relevance and usefulness of the content on the website, the number and quality of other websites that link to it, and the keywords used on the website and in the query.

To use Google, simply open your web browser and go to the Google homepage at www.google.com. Once there, you can enter your query into the search bar at the top of the page and press the “Google Search” button or hit the “Enter” key on your keyboard. Google will then display a list of results that it deems most relevant to your query, with the most relevant results appearing at the top of the page.

You can also use various syntax and operators to perform more advanced searches, such as:

  • Using quotation marks around a phrase to search for that exact phrase
  • Using a minus sign to exclude certain words from your search results
  • Using the “site:” operator to search for pages on a specific website
  • Using the “filetype:” operator to search for specific file types, such as PDF or Excel documents
  • and many others

Google has added other services over the years such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Google Maps, Google Images, Google News, Google Translate and Google Scholar. These services are all designed to make users’ online experience more efficient and productive.

Google also offer various tools for developers, marketers and other professionals, such as Google Analytics, Google Ads, Google Search Console, Google Tag Manager and Google Cloud Platform etc. which help them to track their website’s performance, optimize their online presence, manage their advertisement campaigns, and run their applications and workloads on Google’s infrastructure.

As of 2023, Google is one of the largest and most widely-used technology companies in the world, with a global reach and a wide range of products and services that are used by millions of people every day. The company is a subsidiary of Alphabet Inc, a holding company created in 2015 to separate Google’s core businesses from the company’s other ventures.
