The Century Carnival

October 24, 2022 Off By Zak Morris

It was a typical day for seventeen year old girl, until she suddenly found herself transported to the past. She was in her school uniform and it was clearly the early 1900s judging by the fashion and architecture around her. The girl started to panic as she realized she had no idea how she got here or how to get back home.

She walked around aimlessly for a while, not knowing what to do, until she saw a sign for a carnival. She figured that maybe if she could find someone there they could help her figure out what was going on. When she got there, however, it seemed like the carnival was abandoned. It wasn’t until she heard laughter coming from one of the tents that she realized there were people here after all.

She walked into the tent and saw a group of children playing games and having fun. They looked like they were about her age. One of the girls came up to her and asked who she was. The seventeen year old tried to explain that she didn’t know how she got here but the other girl just thought she was joking and laughed. They all started asking her questions about life in 2020 but eventually lost interest when they realized she knew nothing about their time period either.

The kids went back to playing their games and left her alone in the tent feeling confused and scared. Suddenly, an old woman appeared out of nowhere and told her that it wasn’t safe for her to be here by herself and offered to take her home with her. The woman explained that this carnival only comes around once every hundred years and those who enter are stuck here forever unless they leave by midnight on New Year’s Eve – which just so happened to be tonight.

The woman took her home and introduced herself as Mrs Higgins – a witch who has lived in this town for centuries (which would explain why no one batted an eye at seeing a talking rabbit earlier). Mrs Higgins told her that if wants any chance of getting back home, she needs help from someone with magic powerful enough break the spell that keeps this carnival frozen in time – which is why finding another witch is essential . After hearing this, our protagonist decides that come hell or high water, she’s getting out of here even if it means spending New Year’s Eve searching for another witch..
