The Properties and Uses of Group 1 Elements

Group 1 elements are also known as alkali metals. They include lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium, caesium and francium. All of these elements have similar properties: they are all soft, silvery-white metals with low densities. They are also highly reactive, meaning that they will readily form compounds with other elements. This reactivity is due to the fact that the outermost electron in each atom is only loosely held by the nucleus. As a result, these electrons can easily be lost to form positive ions (cation). The high reactivity of Group 1 elements makes them useful in many industrial applications. For example, lithium is used in batteries and sodium is used in street lamps. Potassium is an important nutrient for plants, and rubidium and caesium are used in atomic clocks.
