How to Convert Percentages, Decimals, and Fractions

A percentage is a number or ratio expressed as a fraction of 100. It is often denoted using the percent sign, “%”, or sometimes as “pct.” For example, 35% is equal to the decimal 0.35, or the fraction 35/100. To calculate a percentage, multiply the decimal by 100, or divide the fraction by its denominator and multiply by 100:

35% = 0.35 × 100 = 35/100 × 100 = 3.5 × 10

Converting from a Percentage To convert from a percentage to a decimal, divide by 100:

35% = 35/100 = 0.35

To convert from a percentage to a fraction, divide by 100 and reduce the fraction:

35% = 35/100 = 7/20 (reduced)

Converting from a Decimal To convert from a decimal to a percentage, multiply by 100:

0.35 = 0.35 × 100 = 35%

To convert from a decimal to a fraction, remove the decimal point and place it over the number’s power of ten, then reduce:

0.35 = 3.5 × 10-1 (move decimal point two places to the left) = 7/20 (reduced)
