The dog trotted happily down the street, taking in all the new smells of the neighbourhood. It had been awhile since he’d been out for a walk and he was enjoying himself. Suddenly, he stepped on something soft and spongy. His paw sunk down into it and he yelped in surprise. He tried to pull his paw out, but it was stuck. He tugged and tugged, but it was no use. He was stuck. He tried to reach his other paw out to the side to see if he could get a better grip, but before he could, he felt himself falling. He yelped again as he tumbled down into the darkness. He landed with a thump at the bottom of a deep hole. It was pitch black down here and the dog was terrified. He whimpered and tried to climb back up the sides of the hole, but it was too slippery. He was stuck. Suddenly, he heard other dogs barking. He perked up his ears and listened. It sounded like they were coming closer. He barked back, hoping they would find him. Sure enough, a few moments later, a group of dogs came trotting into the hole. They were all different shapes and sizes, but the dog was relieved to see them. They sniffed him all over and licked his face. It was clear they were happy to see him. The dog wagged his tail, feeling a little better now that he wasn’t alone. The dogs showed him around the underground world they lived in. There were tunnels and caverns full of all kinds of dogs. He met a schnauzer who showed him where to find the best bones, a poodle who showed him where to get a good grooming, and a pit bull who showed him how to defend himself. The dog was happy to have found this new world and he knew he’d be happy here.
