Have you ever thought about all the ways your senses let you experience the world? Our five main senses — sight, hearing, taste, smell, and touch — help us take in and explore the environment, unlocking its mysteries. Every sight and sound, every scent, every flavor, and every tactile sensation combines to let us discover more about our place in the universe. Let’s take a look at each sense, and how it allows us to explore the world around us.

1. Understanding Human Senses

Building Blocks of Wellbeing: The Human Senses

We humans are blessed with a great number of senses that work together in tandem, helping us to interact with and understand the environment around us. The most common human senses are:

  • Hearing
  • Sight
  • Touch
  • Smell
  • Taste

Each of these senses are well developed and useful. Our ability to perceive auditory, visual, and tactile sensations allows us to interact with the world around us in a multitude of ways. We are given valuable feedback from our physical environment which helps us navigate and comprehend the world. Our ability to smell and taste enables us to develop relationships with our environment further by forming associations between our experiences and recognizing these external stimuli. Additionally, these senses act as red flags warning us of dangers present in our environment and providing us with the necessary knowledge to avoid them. While these senses may differ in strength from person to person they are all essential components of our wellbeing.

2. Unraveling the Wonders of Sight

The sense of sight plays an incredibly important part in our lives. Our ability to observe the beauty of the world is through our eyes. From the vast night sky filled with stars to a small, bright-eyed puppy – the wonders of sight are vast and varied.

Studies have shown that our eyes can perceive more than 10 million colors. Our eyes can differentiate shades and tones that no camera or computer can truly match. Our retinas allow us to pick out fine details, from the intricate pattern of fingerprint ridges to the fine hairs on a baby’s forehead. As humans, our vision enables us to explore the greater world and experience connections with others that could never be possible otherwise.

  • Our vision brings us closer to the mysteries of the natural world. Birdwatchers identify species by sight and study the intricacies of migration patterns. Scuba divers observe the magnificence of the deep aquatic world.
  • Our vision builds inspiration and creativity. With our eyes, we observe the colors and textures of the world, motivating us to bring ideas to life and explore our imaginations.
  • Our vision brings us joy. Unique colors, shapes and sizes in nature bring us a feeling of wonder and admiration.

3. Revealing the Secrets of Hearing

Most of us don’t take the time to think about the miracles of hearing. We take for granted that our ears are a sensitive receptor for sound – that it can process the dynamic range of frequency we are exposed to! But, there’s far more to hearing than we think.

Humans can hear noises across the entire spectrum with frequencies ranging from 20Hz to 20,000Hz. Our brain is amazingly capable of recognizing the distinct sound from each frequency, and the combination of those frequencies that make up a unique sound. With the help of the otoacoustic emission, we are also able to detect the mechanical and neural origin of our auditory inputs. Amazingly, with nerve fibers connecting two of the small bones in our inner ear, we can detect even the softest sound in a quiet room!

4. Appreciating the Wonders of Taste, Smell and Touch

It is amazing how the human body can sense the world through taste, smell, and touch. With the vast wealth of flavors and smells that accompany any dish, it’s no wonder why good food is so appreciated. Eating something delicious can transport the taste buds to a whole different level of pleasure.

Touching textures can be just as stimulating as tasting and smelling something. From the softness of a feather to the graininess of sand, each texture has its own unique experience. Going for a walk in nature, feeling the texture of rocks and grass, and exploring the natural world with our hands can provide immense joy and wonder.

  • Taste: Appreciating the many flavors of food on the tongue
  • Smell: Enjoying the variety of aromas around us
  • Touch: Taking pleasure in the different textures with our hands

We’ve come full circle. From the vast wonders of the human sense, to understanding the intricacies of seeing, hearing, tasting, smelling, and feeling, our journey has truly opened our eyes to new knowledge. Now that you have an increased understanding of the many ways our world is experienced, there’s no limit to the adventures that lie ahead. Exploring the human senses is just the beginning.
