Who where the Suffragettes?

The Suffragettes were a political group who fought for women’s right to vote in the early 20th century. They were also known as the Women’s Social and Political Union (WSPU). The Suffragettes campaigned through peaceful protests and civil disobedience. They used tactics such as hunger strikes and window-smashing to raise awareness of their cause.

The movement was started by Emmeline Pankhurst in 1903. Pankhurst was a British suffragette who helped women gain the right to vote. She founded the WSPU, which became the most well-known organization fighting for women’s suffrage.

In 1918, the Representation of the People Act was passed, which gave some women over the age of 30 the right to vote. In 1928, all women over 21 were given equal voting rights with men.

The Suffragettes played a significant role in achieving these reforms. Their campaigns brought attention to the issue of women’s suffrage and helped pressure parliament to pass laws granting women greater access to voting rights.
