  2. The mantle is the layer below the crust and is made up of hot, solid rock. It is the largest layer of the Earth, accounting for about 84% of the planet’s total volume. The mantle is composed of minerals such as olivine and pyroxene, and it is so hot that the rock is able to flow like a fluid.
  3. The outer core is the layer below the mantle and is made up of liquid metal, primarily iron and nickel. It is about 2,200 kilometers (1,367 miles) thick and is extremely hot, with temperatures reaching up to 7,200 degrees Fahrenheit (4,000 degrees Celsius).
  4. The inner core is the very center of the Earth and is made up of solid metal, primarily iron. It is about 1,500 kilometers (932 miles) in diameter and is even hotter than the outer core, with temperatures reaching up to 9,000 degrees Fahrenheit (5,000 degrees Celsius).

In addition to these four main layers, the Earth’s interior also contains a number of other features, including the lithosphere, the asthenosphere, and the core-mantle boundary.

The lithosphere is the outer layer of the Earth that consists of the crust and the uppermost part of the mantle. It is brittle and can break, leading to the formation of earthquakes and volcanoes.
