What is a Tesla Coil?

A Tesla coil is a type of electrical transformer invented by Nikola Tesla in 1891. It is used to produce high-voltage, low-current AC electricity. The Tesla coil consists of two parts: the primary and the secondary coils. The primary coil is typically made of thick copper wire and the secondary coil is made of thin copper wire wound around a metal core. The two coils are connected by a spark gap that allows sparks to jump between them.

When AC current flows through the primary coil, it creates a magnetic field that inductively couples to the secondary coil. This causes current to flow in the secondary coil as well. The current in the secondary coil amplifies the magnetic field, which in turn amplifies the current flowing in the primary coil. This feedback loop continues until all of the energy from the AC power source has been transferred to the magnetic field or sparks start jumping across the spark gap.

The output voltage from a Tesla Coil can be thousands of volts, with currents typically in milliamps (thousandths of an amp). The high voltages produced by a Tesla Coil can be used for various purposes such as powering light bulbs or other devices without wires, producing X-rays, or making sparks (which is how most people are familiar with them).

Tesla coils can be made in a variety of sizes, from small ones that fit in the palm of your hand to large ones that are several feet tall. The size of the Tesla coil determines the maximum output voltage and current it can produce.
