What is emphasis?

It can be used to draw attention to an important point, create a contrast between two ideas, or emphasise an emotion or feeling. Why use emphasis?
Using emphasis in your writing helps you communicate more clearly and effectively by highlighting key points and ideas. Additionally, emphasising certain words helps emphasise their importance, which makes them easier for readers to remember. Finally, emphasising certain words or phrases can add depth and nuance to any piece of written work as they often convey subtle emotions that would otherwise go unnoticed without being highlighted.
How to Use Emphasis Effectively:
1) Choose Wisely. When selecting which words you want to emphasise in your work, choose them carefully so that they accurately reflect what you are trying to say and do not distract from other important points you are trying to make with your writing.
2) Balance is key. Too much emphasis on one word or phrase can detract from its impact rather than enhance it; therefore, it’s important not to overuse this technique when crafting a piece of written work, as too much focus on one element takes away from other elements within the text itself.
3) Vary Your Methods: There are several different ways you can use emphasis, such as by bolding, italicizing, or underlining specific words; using quotation marks; capitalising select letters; changing the font size, style, or color, etc. By varying these methods throughout your piece(s), you will ensure all emphasised areas remain interesting yet effective at conveying their intended message(s).
4) Keep It Consistent: Once you have chosen where and how many times each method should be used throughout a given document, try and keep it consistent throughout similar pieces if possible (e.g., always italicise titles). Doing so will help maintain clarity within all works while allowing readers to recognise patterns quickly when skimming through various documents simultaneously (which may come in handy during exams!).
