What is a Preposition?

A preposition is a word that shows the relationship between two things. It usually comes before a noun or pronoun. For example, in the sentence “The cat slept on the mat,” the word “on” is a preposition.

Prepositions are used to describe position, direction, time, and other relationships between things. Common prepositions include: about, above, across, after, against, along, among, around, at, before below , beneath , beside , between , beyond , by down , during for from in inside into near of off on outside over past through till to toward under up upon with within.

Some examples of how prepositions are used:

The flowers are blooming in the garden. (Describes position)
Please hand me the book on the table. (Describes position)
He’s looking for his keys underneath the couch cushions. (Describes position)
They walked across the street. (Describes direction)
I will see you after class. (Describes time)
The cat slept underneath the tree. (Describes position)
The bird flew over the house. (Describes position)
I’m going to the store with my girlfriend. (Describes relationship)
