What was Pompeii?

Pompeii is an ancient city that was destroyed by a volcano in 79 AD. The city was located in southern Italy, near the city of Naples. Pompeii was a popular tourist destination because of its well-preserved buildings and artefacts. However, the city is now buried under lava and ash from the eruption of Mount Vesuvius.

Pompeii was founded in the 7th century BC by the Greeks. The city flourished as a trading centre due to its location on the Mediterranean Sea. Pompeii became part of Rome in 80 BC and prospered under Roman rule. However, the city began to decline in the 1st century AD due to economic and political problems.

The eruption of Mount Vesuvius in 79 AD covered Pompeii with lava and ash, killing many of its inhabitants. The exact number of people who died is unknown, but it is estimated that around 20,000 people were killed. The eruption also destroyed most of the buildings and artefacts in Pompeii, making it one of the most famous archaeological sites in the world today.
