DNA and Gender Determination

All living things depend on deoxyribonucleic acid, also known as DNA, which is a double helix found in chromosomes. There are 23 pairs in a human: 1, 2, 3, ... 20, 21, 22, and Y/X.

Your natal (birth) gender is determined by the Y and X chromosomes. * Females have two X chromosomes (XX). * Males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).

The father of a newborn defines its biological gender as having either X or Y.
