What is an Organelle?

An organelle is a specialized subunit within a cell that performs a specific function. Organelles are typically surrounded by their own membrane, which separates them from the rest of the cell and helps to regulate their function. Some of the most important organelles in a cell include the nucleus, which contains the cell's DNA and is involved in the control of gene expression; the mitochondria, which are the cell's "powerhouses" and generate the energy needed for the cell to function; and the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus, which are involved in the synthesis, modification, and transport of proteins and other biomolecules. Other important organelles include the lysosomes, which are involved in the degradation of waste materials and worn-out organelles; the peroxisomes, which are involved in the breakdown of fatty acids and detoxification of harmful substances; and the vacuoles, which help to maintain the shape of the cell and store materials such as water, salts, and pigments. The function and organization of organelles are essential for the overall function of the cell, and defects in organelle function can lead to a range of health problems.
