Building the Roman Empire

The Roman Empire was one of the largest and most powerful empires in history. It lasted for over 500 years and at its height controlled most of Europe, North Africa, and the Middle East.

The Founding of the Empire

The Roman Empire was founded in 27 BC by Augustus, the adopted son of Julius Caesar. Augustus was a skilled general and politician who succeeded in uniting the Roman Republic under his control. He established a new form of government called the Principate, which was a mix of monarchy and republic.

Expansion and Decline

The Roman Empire continued to expand under the successors of Augustus. The empire reached its greatest extent under the emperor Trajan, who ruled from 98 to 117 AD. Trajan conquered Dacia (modern-day Romania), Armenia, and Mesopotamia.

The Roman Empire began to decline in the 3rd century AD. The empire was plagued by political instability, economic problems, and military defeats. The empire was eventually divided into two halves, the Western Roman Empire and the Eastern Roman Empire.

The Western Roman Empire collapsed in 476 AD. The Eastern Roman Empire, also known as the Byzantine Empire, continued to exist for another 1000 years.
