Edexcel GCSE Foundation Maths: Views and Elevations
What are Views and Elevations?
Views and elevations are a way of representing a 3D object in 2D. They show different perspectives of the object, helping us understand its shape and size.
Types of Views:
- Plan View: This view shows the object as if you were looking down on it from above. It's like a bird's-eye view.
- Front Elevation: This view shows the object as if you were facing it directly from the front.
- Side Elevation: This view shows the object as if you were facing it directly from the side.
Example:
Imagine a cube.
- Plan View: A square.
- Front Elevation: A square.
- Side Elevation: A square.
Drawing Views and Elevations:
- Use grid paper: This helps to keep your drawings accurate.
- Draw lines carefully: Use a ruler and pencil for precise lines.
- Label your views: Clearly indicate which view is which (Plan, Front, Side).
Example:
Let's say we have a simple rectangular box.

Using Views and Elevations:
- Design and construction: Architects and engineers use views and elevations to design and build structures.
- Understanding objects: They help us visualize complex shapes and understand how they are put together.
- Problem-solving: They can be used to solve practical problems, such as finding the volume or surface area of an object.
Remember:
- Practice drawing different views and elevations of various objects.
- Pay attention to the details and dimensions.
- Use your understanding of views and elevations to solve problems.
